The clipping glossary
Every term you will hear from us, or from anyone else selling short-form distribution, defined in plain language.
A
Allocation
The process of matching a specific clip to a specific creator based on category, audience geography, historical retention and platform. Allocation is closed at Vanguard — only vetted network members receive assets.
Always-on distribution
A permanent weekly output cycle rather than discrete campaign bursts. Contrasted with campaign-based distribution, which stops when the budget does.
Anti-bot verification
The set of checks applied to a view before it is counted and billed. At Vanguard this is four stages: source, behaviour, network and reconciliation.
B
Bot farm
An operation running large numbers of automated or low-quality accounts to inflate view counts. The primary fraud vector in paid clipping.
T
The Cull (step 2)
Our word for the human review stage. Every clip the network sends back is watched start to finish by an editor, and roughly nine in ten are thrown out. Nothing is sampled and no software does a first pass.
B
Beat
One slot in a planned release. A beat says which clip goes out, on which channel, on which platform, and how long after the last one. A campaign usually has five to nine.
Brand safety review
Checking a clip against the client brief, category restrictions and legal claims list before it reaches a creator account.
C
Clip
A short vertical video cut from longer source footage, formatted for a specific platform.
Clipper
A creator who cuts long-form content into short clips and posts them from their own account. Also called a social media clipper.
Clipping agency
A managed service that produces and distributes clips through a creator network. Also called a clipper agency, clipping service or content clipping agency — the model is identical.
Clipping campaign
A defined distribution push with a budget, reach target, platform mix and time window.
Clipping infrastructure
Clipping run as a permanent capability rather than a project: standing editorial capacity, a maintained creator network, and a verification layer.
Closed network
A creator network that does not accept self-signup. Every member is screened and can be removed. The opposite of an open marketplace.
Content rewards
Platform or brand programmes paying creators per view for posting about a product. Frequently targeted by bot fraud.
CPM
Cost per mille — the cost of 1,000 impressions, and the standard unit in paid media. Vanguard deliberately does not price this way: a CPM pays a supplier to maximise volume, which is the opposite of a selection model.
T
The Verdict™
Vanguard’s proprietary 0 to 100 score for a clip, estimating how deeply and how quickly a viewer processes it. Calibrated against 18 billion views of prior distribution. Clips scoring below 61 are not published.
C
Creator pod
A group of creators allocated to one market, language or content style, managed as a unit.
Cross-posting
Publishing the same clip to more than one platform. Done badly it triggers unoriginal-content penalties; done properly each platform gets a distinct native edit.
F
Format family
A group of clips sharing a hook type and structure, tested together so performance can be attributed to the format rather than the individual clip.
H
Hook
The first one to three seconds of a clip. The single largest determinant of retention and therefore of distribution.
K
KOL
Key opinion leader — an influencer paid for individual placements. Distinct from clipping, which distributes across thousands of accounts rather than renting a few.
L
Long-form source
The original content a clip is cut from: podcast, webinar, keynote, stream VOD, product demo or interview.
N
Native posting
Uploading directly to a platform from an account with genuine history, without watermarks or cross-platform artefacts. Native posts receive materially better algorithmic distribution.
O
Organic reach
Distribution earned through the algorithm rather than bought through an ad auction.
P
Posting window
The staged time range across which a batch of clips goes live, so activity reads as organic rather than coordinated.
Profile click
A viewer tapping through from a clip to an account. A stronger intent signal than a view and a standard metric on the Vanguard dashboard.
T
The Arc (step 5)
The planned order clips go out in — which one, when, on which platform, from which channel — so that someone following along sees a story building instead of a pile of unrelated posts.
D
Deployment (step 4)
Pages and accounts Vanguard owns and runs itself, as opposed to influencer accounts rented one post at a time. Because they are ours, launch dates always hold.
T
The Verdict (step 3)
The scoring stage. Clips that survive human review are scored 0 to 100 on the Verdict, which estimates how deeply a viewer processes them. Vanguard publishes above 61. What moves the number is not published.
The Crucible™
Vanguard’s name for its five-step process: make far too many clips, review every one by hand, test the survivors, post on the network, release in a planned order. About one clip in thirty-eight gets through all five.
R
Retention curve
The percentage of viewers still watching at each second. The metric platforms actually optimise against.
F
Flood (step 1)
Sending your video to the whole network at once so thousands of editors cut it at the same time. Making far more than we need is the point — 12,000+ clips per campaign is normal.
R
Routing layer
The system that filters traffic against known farm ranges, device clusters and repeat-view signatures before views are counted.
S
Short-form distribution
Getting short vertical video in front of audiences at scale — as distinct from short-form production, which only creates the files.
Sound adoption
The number of distinct creators attaching a given audio track to their own content. The core metric in music campaigns.
U
UGC
User-generated content — original content shot by creators about a product, as opposed to clips cut from brand-supplied footage.
Unoriginal content policy
Platform rules demoting reposted, watermarked or duplicated material. The reason every clip in a campaign must be a distinct edit.
V
Verified view
A view that has cleared every fraud filter and is eligible to be billed. The only view Vanguard invoices for.
Vetting
Screening a creator for authenticity, audience quality, geography and category fit before granting network access.
W
Whitelisting
A creator granting a brand permission to run paid amplification through the creator’s own handle.
